New Type of Blog Comment Spam
Today I had the unfortunate first-hand experience of seeing a new form of blog comment spamming. On my other blog FollowSteph.com, someone posted a comment that contained a full article, including the “About the Author” section at the bottom of the article which had multiple links to the authors website.
This is the first time I’ve seen or heard of this type of blog comment spam which I’m going to refer as “Article Comment Spamming”. What’s also interesting is that the content of the article was in the same ballpark as my blog’s general topics (Business, Real Estate, LandlordMax - my company, and anything related to success), but was not fully appropriate for this particular entry.
This type of spam commenting is worse for more reasons than just the usual This type of commenting creates duplicate content on your blog, which penalizes you for SEO (Search Engine Optimization) purposes because the articles are replicated over and over. Remember that an article is more content than just a link to a spam related product, so duplication penalties will be greater.
It also has an added benefit for the spammer in terms of SEO. Although it’s further down on the page in terms of content (and hence less value), because of the shear size (in this case the article in the comment was longer than my original article) it can skew what Google and other search engines think your page is about! The benefit for the comment spammer is that their now getting links for the keyword they want, not you!
And on top of that, Google Adsense (or other contextual advertising programs) will potentially pull ads related to the keyword your spammer’s article is about. For some people, this can be a great detriment. For me personally, I just write and don’t really look at what Adsense pulls because my main revenue streams are elsewhere. For example, for FollowSteph.com my goal is to talk about my company LandlordMax Property Management Software, what’s happening with it, personalize it by letting people know about me, and so on. The Google Adsense revenue is just an added bonus.
In any case, be on the lookout for this, I suspect it will increase in usage as time goes on. It’s my belief that it’s worse than the plain old comment spam because it negatively effect you much more than just a simple link to a spam related product did , it can actually affect what the search engines perceive your page to be about!

Why not just use CAPTCHA’s (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captcha) for all comment postings?
I’ve thought of using CAPTCHA but I find it too annoying myself, so I don’t want my readers to have to go through that process. Maybe in the future if it becomes too much, but for now I’m going to try and stay with tools like Askimet.

This kind of comment spammer has been around for well over a year. It’s really annoying because it looks like someone is responding when they are spamming.
Also keep an eye out for jokes, nice comments and compliments, quotes and excerpts from the news and books, foreign languages, and dissertations. I hate the latter, as they are the ones that run on and on and say nothing. Useless time wasters.
Captchas are dumb. I’m glad you want to skip that. Akismet, Spam Karma, and Bad Behavior, used together or separately, are awesome and practically no effort. Though you do have to watch out for their constant attempts to outwit even humans.
Remember, if you are using Akismet, when you mark a comment as comment spam, Akismet gets a note with the specifics, and it goes into a database to help it learn so others using Akismet will be protected. That’s the sweet thing about that!

I didn’t realize that article comment spamming had been around that long. I’ve seen many product plugs, compliments, and such in the comments, but this is the first time I’ve seen comments that are longer than your actual article, especially direct copies with the “About the Author” notes in them. The reason I find these particularly more annoying is the affects they can have on your Search Engine Rankings because of their shear size. If I wasn’t as prolific a blogger, it could easily go unoticed for some time.
I believe I read an article on your site about compliments, or maybe it was a basic question, where you assumed it was real until you actually clicked on the commenter’s link to find out they were actually an expert on the topic. That I’m starting to see more and more.
Yeah, CAPTCHA’s aren’t for me. Thanks for the references to the other plugins, I’ll take a look. And yes, I generally mark the spam sooner than later because of just that. My other blog (FollowSteph.com) right now gets a very large amount of comment spam, much more than this one, of course this is a fairly new blog (about 2-3 months) and FollowSteph.com has been around for almost 1.5 years…
Basically nothing noteworthy happening right now, but eh. Today was a complete loss. I haven’t been up to much recently. I’ve pretty much been doing nothing worth mentioning.
